Fractionated CO2 Laser Peels
Fractionated CO2 laser treatments are used to reduce the appearance of deep facial wrinkles, melasma (spots of skin darkening) and acne scarring. In addition to areas of the face, Fraxel® lasers can be used to treat the neck, chest, and hands.
The CO2 fractionated laser penetrates deeper into the layers of the skin to erase more pronounced creasing or pigmentation. Fractionated (Fraxel®) CO2 laser technology utilizes a series of tiny laser columns to penetrate the dermis creating tiny wounds that the body heals by increasing production of collagen and elastin and generating new skin.

Procedure
Using advanced laser technology, a carbon dioxide (CO2) laser for skin resurfacing removes outer layers of damaged skin to reveal the underlying skin which is softer, smoother, and younger looking. CO2 is one of the most commonly used laser technologies for deep facial lines, wrinkles, and advanced skin damage. It is sometimes combined with fat injections to achieve an optimal youthful appearance.
The procedure can be performed on specific areas (such as around the mouth or eyes) or over the surface of the entire face. During a CO2 laser skin resurfacing treatment, a local anesthetic is used to relieve potential discomfort. If the entire face is being treated, medicine will be provided for mild sedation. The numbing process, sedation, and laser treatment will take about an hour. Someone will need to drive you home if sedation is necessary.
Possible Candidates
If you have fine lines or wrinkles around the eyes, mouth or on the forehead, shallow scars from acne or skin that has not responded to other forms of treatment, then you may be a good candidate for Fractional CO2 Laser Resurfacing.
High Definition Fractional CO2 Laser Resurfacing is not recommended for people with active acne or tanned/dark skin, as it can cause hyper-pigmentation, or dark spots in patients with these characteristics. If you are interested, speak to Dr. Kim to determine whether this is the right treatment for your skin.
Post Treatment
After the CO2 laser procedure, treated areas should be kept clean and out of the sun as sunlight and environmental toxins can irritate and cause damage to healing skin. You will have some mild redness and a sunburn-like sensation for 5-10 days. Cold compresses can help alleviate any discomfort.
In addition to avoiding exposure to sunlight, hot water should not be used to wash the face for the first 2 days. Wait at least 10 hours following treatment to wash your face and avoid products that may cause irritation. Stick to mild soaps that do NOT exfoliate. Pat-dry the face gently and avoid wearing makeup for 4-5 days while the skin heals.
Complete post procedure care and products necessary will be provided to you on the day of the procedure.
Once the skin has healed you will be left with a new, soft complexion. The Fractional CO2 Laser Resurfacing procedure acts on the top layer of skin cells to reveal the underlying dermis. In the process, the underlying layer of skin regenerates collagen and stimulates growth of a healthy new top layer of skin leading to younger skin and improved appearance.
